AGATE DESIGN

PROPULSION

------------------------------------------------------
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY     A powerful propulsion system enables the VenTure to surpass FAR 23 land and water take-off distance specifications and to perform at standards above its competitors. Higher power traditionally has meant heavier engines at a higher price tag.  Bridging the gap between higher aircraft weight and excellent performance characteristics necessitates an innovative solution.  The propulsion system of the VenTure meets AGATE velocity specifications while exceeding performance, cost, reliability, and environmental safety expectations (Appendix F).

The focal point of the system is the advanced Zoche Aero-Diesel, pictured in Figure 4.  Able to produce 300 hp at only 271 lb. in weight, the performance of the Zoche Aero-Diesel is highlighted by the best efficiency in its class.  A power to weight ratio of  1.11 hp/lb. exceeds contemporary standards for piston driven engines.  Sea level power is maintained to an altitude of 9000 feet through the use of  a turbocharger and a supercharger.  Drag (only 3.5 ft2 of frontal area) and passenger cabin noise are minimized by a symbiotic integration of the engine into the aircraft geometry.  A variable pitch propeller optimizes power absorption through any mission phase.

The high performance of this engine comes at a low cost to the consumer.  Life cycle cost of the Zoche Aero-Diesel is below that of comparable spark ignition engines.  Engine acquisition cost is set at $60,000, the same level as a present day Textron Lycoming 300 hp engine (Reference F-10). Operation costs are reduced by superb engine efficiency and by running on cheaper diesel and jet fuels.  Maintenance costs are minimized by a low engine part count and reduced operational wear.

Implementation of the innovative two-stroke Zoche diesel engine heightens reliability.  A gear reduction system, valves, timing cams, spark plugs, belts, and complicated electrical systems are eliminated, eradicating engine repairs associated with these parts.  Engine cycle wear is decreased due to lower operating temperatures, lower cycle speeds, and an advanced pressurized prelubrication system.  Reduced engine wear increases safety, time between overhauls, and economy.

Environmental safety is enhanced through the engine’s use of alternative fuels, greater fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions.  Jet fuels and diesel fuel, both used by the Zoche Aero-Diesel, are accessible world-wide at a cost lower than AVGAS.  These fuels provide greater fuel efficiency through increased heating values.  Emissions from the engine contain lower CO2, NOx, and lower soot and unburned hydrocarbons than present general aviation engines.

The Zoche-Aero Diesel and three-blade variable pitch propeller catapult the performance, reliability, and environmental safety of the VenTure from the dreams of general aviation enthusiasts into a tangible reality.
